An in-depth look at the world of high-tech assembly

Bonding optical components requires up-to-date knowledge of processes, materials and adhesives. In a series of interviews, we bring together our leading technical specialists in assembly, parts manufacturing, and development to promote collaboration and innovation.

Reiner Berger is Head of Production and specialises in optomechanics. He and his team have been following DIN 2304-1 to date and will familiarise themselves with DIN EN ISO 21368 in the coming months.

How do you and your team keep up to date with evolving standards and requirements?

Reiner Berger: ‘As we operate in the medical technology sector, standards have always been more important than in other sectors. We therefore work with certified trainers to train our adhesive application specialists; these trainers provide regular training for our staff, and the courses conclude with a practical examination. We also have two certified bonding specialists, called EAS, on our team who define and document the bonding processes using the VKS assembly software. The EAS also define the documentation parameters. Their responsibilities include risk management and validating bonding processes. They also oversee the change management process in the event of changes to standards or specifications.’

Have there been any significant changes or developments in materials beyond the standards?

Reiner: β€˜Yes, there are now more product groups and, consequently, more components that involve bonding processes. In addition, we use a wider range of materials. Sometimes we use two-component adhesives, while in other cases UV adhesives are the better alternative. We have an automated UV bonding system. In this process, the adjustment of the bonding and the bonding processes is automated and carried out with an accuracy of a few β€˜Β΅m’. This ensures high process stability and short processing times. Consequently, in this case, the UV adhesive is a significantly better choice than, for example, a two-component adhesive.’

How do you source your adhesives?

Reiner Berger: β€˜The customer specifies an adhesive, or we select one and verify the choice through process validation. The selection is based on the customer’s predefined requirements, such as temperature, humidity, UV resistance, and service life. We also use specialised adhesives, and for these, the manufacturer carries out separate batch tests. Adhesive bonding integrates development, quality, and processes. These developments make our work dynamic from day to day.’
