A modular transport system for Bosch Rexroth

This is the first introduction of a new transport system for Bosch Rexroth. We asked the Director of Development & NPI from Hittech Multin, Bas van Bree, how this system was developed.

Bas van Bree: “The team from Bosch Rexroth decided to handle the development of the ctrlX FLOW Transport System by using an ecosystem of partners. A method we are very familiar with from the semicon industry. In this case, MI Partners developed the concept from the idea of Bosch Rexroth and made the first design. To get an early focus on manufacturability and value engineering, we were asked to join the team to integrate all the electronics, linear motors, and guiding systems into the mechanics of the different segments. Bosch Rexroth developed the drive and power distribution electronics together with an acquired company Elmo and another partner Verhaert developed the absolute position sensor. Then, we created a full-scale, integrated design, which will be validated with lead customers of Bosch Rexroth.”

Jurjen Nicolai, Business Owner of Transport Systems at Bosch Rexroth, explains the importance of this ecosystem of partners and the early involvement of them in the process. Jurjen: “Time to market is essential, and early involvement enables us to look at manufacturability quickly. We needed a partner to work with design concepts instead of detailed drawings. The team at Hittech Multin could do just that. All we had in February 2022 was an idea on a piece of paper and a 3D animation. Within a year, we’ve got a functioning prototype with MI -Partners. To get an early focus on manufacturability and value engineering, Hittech has been selected and included in the partnership. That combination of manufacturability and value engineering made Hittech Multin stand out in the market.”

What makes this system so innovative? Jurjen: “This high-speed transport system brings speed and flexibility to manufacturing. Its modular properties and characteristics set it apart. It can be configured flexibly for different applications. It’s a bit like a miniature train track: we make curves, straight parts and switches so our clients can create their personalised transport system topology. In this concept, it’s a next step for the transport market.”
